What I Learned In My Sports Journalism Class

In my sports journalism class, I have learned a variety of new skills that I can use in my career. Although I do not think I want to become a journalist, this class has given me a chance to broaden my knowledge throughout my college and has definitely put me out of my comfort zone at times. We have learned how to properly interview someone, how to write following AP style, video productions, podcasts, the difference between blogging and reporting and much more.

The most important skill I have learned was using AP style consistently and writing concisely and to the point. AP style is not only used in journalism but also public relations, which is what my major is. It is very important to make an effort to pay attention to AP style and use the online version or the book to reference.

Another thing I got to practice while taking this class was interviewing, photography, podcasting, and blogging. I have conducted interviews before so I was never really nervous but when I had to attend a game and interview multiple people that was a little nerve-racking because I have never interviewed athletes before. I learned that no matter what you are interviewing for whether it is sports, fashion, education, etc you need to research the people you are interviewing and the subject. Also, it is extremely important that you ask open-ended questions instead of yes and no questions. This way you can make sure you get answers that will give you a story. One thing that really put me out of my element but I am happy I did was going to take pictures at the men’s UTK basketball game. I had to get a media pass and sit on the court to take pictures. I have never done this before so I was pretty nervous and our basketball team has grown in popularity. I am glad I had the chance to do this because now I am would not be nervous to do it again.

Overall, I think this class was very beneficial to me and I can use a lot of the writing skills I have learned for my public relations career. I am not 100% sure what I will be doing after graduation but whatever it is I know I will be dealing with interviews and writing.
