Visuals in sports stories are important because it gives the readers something to look at besides just a bunch of words on the page. Visuals add flavor to sports journalists stories and give clues to what the story might be about before a person even starts to read it. Sports writers can have videos or pictures as visuals in any of their sports stories. In order to have a picture that is pleasing to the eye, you have to make sure that it follows the rule of thirds, has good lighting, contrasting colors, and is in focus. If the picture is not very pleasing to the eye or does not capture what the sports journalists are trying to convey in their story then readers will be left confused or frustrated. Readers like to see game environments in journalists’ pictures. When the environment is captured the reader can see what the audience turn out is, what the weather is, who is playing, etc.. When capturing big plays and moments in a sporting event it is important to show the play or moment in a way that portrays it well. Since media has become a huge part of reporting, visuals are important to keep the attention of viewers and keep them talking about your piece.

Brandi Chastain is celebrating after scoring the winning penalty kick (5-4) to give the USA the 1999 Women’s World Cup in the Rose Bowl. The way Chastain was celebrating showed great emotion and the power that women can represent in a sports world that is so male dominated.

University of Tennessee football coach Philip Fulmer is raising the 1998 National Championship trophy after beating Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl. This was the last season that the University of Tennessee won the college football National Championship.
The Michael Jordan free-throw line dunk in the 1988 NBA dunk contest stood out to me for a few different reasons. First, it was one of the most innovative and difficult dunks during that time period. Second, it is one of the most iconic pictures in any sport. Third, this photo promoted Michael Jordan’s personal brand for decades to come; with the “Jummpman” logo being created from this dunk. I think this photo captures the essence of the atmosphere at the contest as well.
I picked the Brandi Chastain 1999 Women’s World Cup picture because she is a fellow woman. I love the emotion she showed, the game winning goal she made, and the sense to reassure myself that women can domiate the same way a man can. This photo is also very focused, has great contrast, and shows movement.
I chose the University of Tennessee head football coach Philip Fulmer raising the 1998 National Championship trophy for college football because I have been a die-hard Tennessee Volunteers football fan since I was a little girl. This picture shows how great of a team Tennessee can be. Even though this picture was taken at night the picture is still bright enough to see what is happening. The orange and the shininess of the trophy pop against the black background.
