Sports Fandom and Sports Journalism

What is sports fandom? A fan is a person who is enthusiastically devoted to something or somebody such as a sports team or franchise. This might sound a lot like yourself. Fans will most likely get their information via Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Redditt, Facebook, TV, or website like Bleacher Report.

Fans want their sports reports to be instant, accurate, and we want to know everything about what happened in the game. If it takes too long to get the information out or it isn’t accurate then fans will not be too happy with the journalist or media source.

Most fans look towards sports as an escape from everyday life, but, ESPN is bringing left-wing politics into their reports that negatively affect their viewership. Fans are not wanting to follow ESPN anymore because they are bringing politics into sports. ESPN is losing millions of dollars in revenue which is causing Disney, their owners,  stock to plummet.

Fans are not the only people that closely follow sports, we also have sports journalists. Sports journalists write and report about amateur and professional sports. These journalists will have a variety of jobs to tackle such as reporting game stats, interviewing coaches and players, and offering game commentary.

Journalists have three expectations to follow when they are writing a piece which includes expertise, accuracy, and resourcefulness. Sports journalists are becoming more mobile which means they are expected to update social media platforms, go live on Facebook or Periscope, have a blog, and write a piece for the newspaper as well.

Fans want to know about the player’s and coaches lives and what happens outside of the game as well as what happens during the game, therefore,  journalists are expected to follow the story outside of the arena or field.
